What does a traitor look like?

So what does a traitor look like?

That is a very good question.

After all, a traitor is different than an enemy.  An enemy declares himself and opposes you openly.  But in order to become a traitor, someone first needs to enjoy your trust.

Those of us in the gun rights community have plenty of enemies … people who have openly declared war on the Second Amendment and the Constitution.  Heck … practically every Democrat in the country seems to have signed up for a frontal assault on gun owners.

But to be betrayed by one of our own is not a common occurrence and when it happens, it never fails to hurt.

Today, Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania betrayed gun owners.  He betrayed us by caving in to pressure from Bloomberg and the Obama Administration and putting forward a supposed “compromise” bill with New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer and West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

That’s right.  Senator Toomey’s co-sponsor in this supposedly ‘Second Amendment Protection Bill’ is none other than Chuck Schumer.  That should be your first clue even before you read the bill.

But when the so-called ‘compromise’ was announced at a press conference today, Schumer was nowhere to be seen.  He stayed away so that Toomey would not have to explain to gun owners why he was standing on the stage with one of the single most anti-gun politicians in the country.

A Democratic aide, speaking to Roll Call, explained Schumer’s absence by noting that Toomey’s job in this bill was to simply “persuade the gun rights groups that it’s an acceptable deal.

We have a name for a creature who goes amongst their own kind to calm them in the face of obvious danger … a Judas Goat.

In any case, returning to the bill text itself shows us … well nothing initially … they have not released the full text to the public yet.  But Gun Owners of America (GOA) and RedState reportedly have a copy and they do not like what they are seeing at all.

First, and perhaps most disconcerting, it contains a provision whereby a doctor can unilaterally add a patient to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) without ever telling the patient.

You heard me … no due processno appeal.  Anger your doctor and you can lose your Second Amendment rights forever.

And as we saw in New York last week, you can bet that as soon as that happens, the SWAT team will be there to take your guns.

The results of this bill are easy to predict.  Gun owners will soon realize that seeing a counselor means losing their rights and they will not seek help, even when they need it.

Veterans with PTSD will face it on their own.

Women with post-partum depression will suffer in silence.

Suicides will increase.

But that’s not all.  Schumer has proudly reported that he made numerous contributions to the bill such as a partial repeal of FOPA so that New York airports can continue to arrest law-abiding gun owners traveling through their state as I have reported on this very week.

Another amendment to the bill by Schumer reportedly stripped out language that would have forced states to recognize each other’s carry permits.

And Toomey wants to take this monstrosity to the floor of the Senate where Democrats can begin building an ‘amendment tree’ that will include an assault weapons ban, a ban on normal capacity magazines, and any other restrictions on the rights of gun owners they can think of.

And all the while, they can smile for the press and declare it to be a ‘bi-partisan’ bill.

All because of Pat Toomey.

So what does a traitor look like?”  They look just like us … until they don’t.

One more nail for the coffin: It’s been reported that we are to be “assured” that this bill will outlaw and stiffly penalize anyone who mis-uses any of this data to set up any sort of a registration of gun ownership.

Sounds great right? Until you consider, WHO will be making the decision to investigate, charge and prosecute a violator of this new crime? The Justice Department. Hmm… Same folks who decided NOT to investigate, charge or prosecute ANYONE in the ATF after they smuggled THOUSANDS of illegally purchased guns to the drug cartels in Mexico.

If the Justice Department won’t punish someone who did that… there’s ZERO chance that any new law against keeping a gun registration is worth the paper it’s printed on.

It astounds me to realize just how stupid these gun-grabbing law-makers think the American people are.

  3. Grapeshot says:

Senator Toomey must be proud to be associated with the likes of Benedict Arnold, Aldrich Ames, Robert Hanssen, and John Walker, Jr.

How many pieces of silver did he gain in exchange for the trust placed in him? You’ve sold your soul Senator – you are a man without honor.

  4. Toomey’s line was busy all afternoon yesterday, and voicemail box full. I hope he’s hearing our position loudly and clearly.

However, once you’re a sponsor of a bill, you can’t exactly say “Oh, sorry, changed my mind.”

John McCain is being featured on Obama’s Facebook page, Toomey is jealous.

  6. Why should this surprise us? Afterall many Republicans are RINO’s (Republican
In Name Only)! This only cofirms what the late Alabama Governor George C.
Wallace stated back in 1968: “There isn’t a dimes worth of difference between
the Democrats and Republicans!” George Wallace was correct then, and has
remained correct ever since. Too, the American public at large willfully has
refused to learn from this, change to an honest third party, and thus remain
deceitfully stupid, deluded, and ignorant! When are voters going to stop “sucking
up to the party line?” On the net:

  7. Joe Doakes says:

A traitor is someone that betrays our country and causes direct harm to those in it.

    The penalty is death.

The Second Amendment is a dual right. In that it protects an individual citizens right to bear arms. But, that individual is governed by the laws in the State he lives in. We can through an act of Congress by way of full faith and credit homogenize those laws; I hope we do this with concealed carry one day . . .

I often attempt to advocate for sound changes in our laws, gun and other ones, to allow all of us to live free lives. Including children.

If keeping guns out of the hands of the “Adam Lanza’s” of the world makes me a traitor to some.

    So be it.

  8. Deborah says:

You can add most of the officials here in Connecticut under the definition of traitor as well. Like everyone else in my state, I was appalled and saddened by the shooting that resulted in the loss of those innocent lives. But what disgusted me even further was how it was exploited by governor Molloy and his cronies who used and controlled those families to push his own agenda-the disarming of law abiding citizens.
Several years ago, the house I lived in with my mother, grandmother, and godfather was broken into, and all of us were shot with a .38 at point-blank range. I was the only one who survived, after two weeks in a coma and two more recovering from the surgery that removed the bullet from my head. It left me with no hearing in one ear, nerve damage that affected my balance, and permanently paralyzed the left side of my face. I realized that it WASN’T the gun’s fault-or the lack of state laws-it was solely the fault of the person who committed the crime. It was covered by the media then as much as the Newtown has been these past months, but with a significant difference- there was NO hue and cry effort to change the laws to ban certain types of guns. I think that one of the reasons why was that the crime was seen for what it was-an action committed by an individual by his own choice, not something to be blamed on those naughty guns being available to the public. In spite of being a victim of a gun crime, I beleive in the Second Amendment, and am totally against what the anti-gun rights people and politicans are attempting to do to those responsible gun owners. I have a licence to carry, and have been asked many times why I do and am not afraid of guns. My reply- why should I be afraid of guns? They are nothing but pieces of equipment designed for a specific purpose. They have NO mind of their own, and can be used for the good of people- defending the life, property, and well-being of people against the thugs, thieves, rapists, and others who would victimize them, who have been released from jail due to a broken down revolving door system that does 99% of nothing to rehabilitate or actually help anyone.
I refuse to give in to any kind of irrational fears the grabbers say I should have. I realize that in most cases, the police arrive AFTER a crime has been committed, when it is too late to save a life or prevent an assault. I will take responsibility to protect myself from those who would cause me harm and loss, and if it means taking their life to protect my own, so be it. I will take responsibility for my OWN life, health, and well being by shooting back if necessary, and for those who would rather have me be a sitting duck to be victimized again, I say go to whatever fantasyland you like. Just don’t expect me to come to your rescue if you need it, because wasn’t it you who told me that if all guns were banned and/or restricted, we would have a safer society?

I wonder if this story will be revisited now that the bill can be read. I have to say, Alan Gottlieb made a compelling case for this bill on Tom Gresham’s Guntalk Radio Show on Sunday. It was also revealing to know that Mr. Gottlieb (or his direct representative) was part of the writing team. He’s a smart guy and I don’t think he’d be so enthusiastic if there was something wrong with it. It sounded like both a strategic and tactical victory. Like Tom said, “SOMEthing is going to pass, it might as well be good for us.” As of this moment, I have to agree.

Fing the show through iTunes or, maybe, at the Guntalk website. The three hour discussion following is very interesting.

Traitor Toomey, as he will forever be known is getting hammered on his Facebook. Looks like his voters are bailing on him left and right.

You can’t fix stupid, but you can vote it out.

  11. Grapeshot says:

A more careful analysis of this bill can be made now that it can be read in its entirety.

Many find serious problems with the details: essentually closes down most all private sales, 18-20 yo will not be able to buy handguns, data base will be created unless you trust your government to not do that.

    • Rick K. says:

I feel like some of the commenters here are reacting the same way some callers did on Guntalk, it was a knee-jerk reaction rather than thinking it through. If the Second Amendment Foundation founder wrote it, it might be worth our while to stop and consider every point. Like Alan said, if left as is we get stuff back and if they try to change it too much we can walk away from it.

Take a breath and let’s see what a thorough analysis reveals. Maybe ML could go through it and study the bill more closely now that he’s not reacting to shadows. Seriously, how far off could Alan Gottlieb be?

  12. Grapeshot says:

The bill has gone down to defeat in the Senate – it crashed and burned!

And to borrow a phrase from the dark side, it did so with bi-partisan support against advancing it.

Never underestimate the power of the people.

Stay active, stay involved – there are other battles to be fought.
