Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; G. K. Chesterton<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yesterday morning a Fresno California woman came face-to-face with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/2012\/08\/29\/2967742\/mom-battles-girls-would-be-kidnapper.html\" target=\"_blank\">every mother&#8217;s worst nightmare<\/a>. \u00a0Just after 8:30 in the morning, a man wearing a ski-mask invaded her home while she and her child were inside. But the horror doesn&#8217;t end there. \u00a0The man was there with a goal. \u00a0He wanted her 2 year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This story is eerily similar to a 2003 kidnapping in San Jose California which <a href=\"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=758\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote about at the time<\/a>. \u00a0In both cases, the mothers fought fiercely but were ultimately beaten by the kidnapper. \u00a0In both cases, the kidnapper grabbed the child despite the mother&#8217;s best efforts. \u00a0But that is where the similarities end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the 2003 kidnapping, the mother was unable to stop the kidnapper from taking her child, who was eventually released by her kidnapper but only after being sexually assaulted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yesterday in Fresno however, the mother had a gun handy, and that gun made all the difference in the world for that family. \u00a0Staring down the barrel of an enraged mother&#8217;s shotgun, the kidnapper put down the child and fled. \u00a0The gun allowed her to accomplish what all of her fear-driven strength could not &#8230; save her child. \u00a0Anti-gun advocates are fond of saying \u201c<em>Imagine a world without guns<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0But for that mother &#8230; and that child &#8230; such a world would be a nightmare.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Samuel Colt is often cited for the poem \u201c<em>You never need fear a man, no matter what his size. \u00a0When danger threatens, call on me, and I will equalize.<\/em>\u201d \u00a0Remember the &#8216;equalization&#8217; part of that poem when next you hear anti-gunners call for a ban on guns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To paraphrase noted gun-rights photographer and writer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/olegvolk.net\/blog\/2012\/08\/09\/we-dont-have-to-imagine-a-world-without-guns-humanity-already-lived-through-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oleg Volk<\/a>, those who make such a call are advocating for a return to a world in which the weak must submit to the strong, where freedom is only that which you can hold onto with your bare hands; a nasty, brutal, medieval world; a world in which this young child would not be with her mother right now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=758\" target=\"_blank\">my 2003 article<\/a>, I noted that my own daughter, who was much younger then, asked at the time,\u00a0\u201c<em>\u2026 why didn\u2019t she just use her gun to stop the bad man?<\/em>\u201d \u00a0I didn&#8217;t have a good answer for her then and I ended that article by noting that \u201c<em>Those who are defenseless themselves can never hope to be the protector of their children.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the converse is also true. \u00a0An armed and prepared parent can use the tools at their disposal to hold back the dark and keep the dragons in their place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cFairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist.
