{"id":273,"date":"2009-02-17T21:44:34","date_gmt":"2009-02-17T21:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=273"},"modified":"2009-02-17T21:44:34","modified_gmt":"2009-02-17T21:44:34","slug":"dispelling-the-myth-of-the-wild-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=273","title":{"rendered":"Dispelling the myth of &#8216;The Wild West&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-274\" title=\"WildWest\" src=\"https:\/\/monachuslex.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/WildWest.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"263\" \/>These are interesting times in the fight to protect and enhance our rights as gun owners.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0Wisconsin, we stand on the eve of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailykenoshan.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=7411&amp;Itemid=107\" target=\"_blank\">an historic court ruling regarding open carry<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0Texas,\u00a0South Carolina,\u00a0Oklahoma\u00a0and\u00a0Arkansas, local activists have succeeded in making their voices heard regarding restoring open carry to these otherwise gun-friendly states.\u00a0\u00a0With all of this pro-gun activity, it should come as little surprise that the anti-gun forces are out in-force repeating their aged mantra \u2026 \u201cThis isn\u2019t the wild west.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this rhetoric is not limited to anti-gunners.\u00a0\u00a0Recently, I was quoted in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/nation\/2009-02-11-guns_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\">a USA Today article<\/a>\u00a0about the open carry initiatives around the country and in that article, Texas Senator Jeff Wentworth (R), a supposedly pro-gun legislator denounced open carry saying &#8220;I think that&#8217;s harkening too far back to the Wild West.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With all this talk of \u201cThe Wild West\u201d, I thought it might be informative to look at the reality of crime in the \u201cwild west\u201d cattle towns and compare them to the peaceful streets of such eastern, gun-control paradises as DC,\u00a0New York,\u00a0Baltimore\u00a0and\u00a0Newark.<\/p>\n<p>In his book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Frontier-Violence-Another-Galaxy-Books\/dp\/0195020987\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1234881730&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Frontier Violence: Another Look<\/em><\/a>, author W. Eugene Hollon, provides us with these astonishing facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In\u00a0Abilene, Ellsworth,\u00a0Wichita,\u00a0Dodge City, and\u00a0Caldwell, for the years from 1870 to 1885, there were only 45 total homicides.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>This equates to a rate of approximately 1 murder per 100,000 residents per year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In\u00a0Abilene, supposedly one of the wildest of the cow towns, not a single person was killed in 1869 or 1870.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Zooming forward over a century to 2007, a quick look at Uniform Crime Report statistics shows us the following regarding the aforementioned gun control \u201cparadise\u201d cities of the east:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DC \u2013 183 Murders\u00a0<strong>(31 per 100,000 residents<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>New York\u00a0\u2013 494 Murders\u00a0<strong>(6 per 100,000 residents)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Baltimore\u00a0\u2013 281 Murders\u00a0<strong>(45 per 100,000 residents)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Newark\u00a0\u2013 104 Murders\u00a0<strong>(37 per 100,000 residents)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take an advanced degree in statistics to see that a return to \u201cwild west\u201d levels of violent crime would be a huge improvement for the residents of these cities.<\/p>\n<p>The truth of the matter is that the \u201cwild west\u201d wasn\u2019t wild at all \u2026 not compared to a Saturday night in\u00a0Newark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These are interesting times in the fight to protect and enhance our rights as gun owners.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0Wisconsin, we stand on the eve of\u00a0an historic court ruling regarding open carry.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0Texas,\u00a0South Carolina,\u00a0Oklahoma\u00a0and\u00a0Arkansas, local activists have succeeded in making their voices heard regarding restoring &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=273\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[58,62,95],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-273","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-views-on-the-second-amendment","category-myths-misconceptions","category-the-wild-west-myth"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/273","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=273"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/273\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=273"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=273"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=273"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
