{"id":357,"date":"2009-02-10T20:02:32","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T20:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=357"},"modified":"2009-02-10T20:02:32","modified_gmt":"2009-02-10T20:02:32","slug":"wisconsin-teacher-fired-for-facebook-firearm-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/monachuslex.com\/?p=357","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin teacher fired for Facebook firearm picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_358\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358\" class=\"size-full wp-image-358\" title=\"ramsdale2\" src=\"https:\/\/monachuslex.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ramsdale2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"163\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The &#39;offending&#39; Facebook picture<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wkowtv.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=9781795&amp;nav=menu1362_10\" target=\"_blank\">an astonishing story of bureaucracy gone mad<\/a>, Betsy Ramsdale, a Beaver Dam, WI Middle School teacher, has been suspended for the unspeakable act of actually displaying a photograph of herself handling a personally owned firearm on her Facebook page.\u00a0 The photo was apparently brought to the attention of school officials by a \u201c<em>concerned staff member<\/em>\u201d of the school.<\/p>\n<p>When you recover from the shock of a teacher actually being allowed to own and proudly display firearms in her private life, then consider the following.\u00a0 If we establish the precedent of allowing teachers to be suspended (or worse) for doing nothing more than displaying photos of themselves engaging in\u00a0<strong>perfectly legal behavior<\/strong>\u00a0that a \u201c<em>concerned staff member<\/em>\u201d finds objectionable, then where does it end?\u00a0 What if the teacher was openly lesbian and displayed a photograph of herself expressing affection with her partner and the \u201c<em>concerned staff member<\/em>\u201d was a homophobe?<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cwhat if\u201d scenarios could go on and on, but they all ultimately distill down to the issue of\u00a0<strong>whether or not we should allow the opinion of one person to override the rights of another<\/strong>.\u00a0 Even the most anti-gun of citizens should fear such a precedent.<\/p>\n<p>To their credit, the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin was quick to react to this blatant infringement of Ms. Ramsdale\u2019s 1st Amendment rights.\u00a0 In a statement issued by Executive Director Chris Ahmuty, they say \u201c<em>Absent any evidence that the teacher poses a threat, the district should not over-react to the sight of a gun in one of their employee\u2019s hands.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 On\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu-wi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">their blog<\/a>, they go on to say that \u201c<em>The context of the photo, which shows Ramsdale training the rifle toward the camera, involves the fact that her page is both personal and that she is a gun enthusiast.
